Twenty-two states are increasing their minimum wage in 2019. Many of these are indexed to the cost-of-living and thus increase on an annual basis. Others may be due to a reaction to the “Fight for $15” movement of the last couple of years. Some states remain on par with the Federal minimum wage of $7.25, which has not changed since 2009. Regardless of where you do business, it is important that you be aware of these minimum wage changes and adjust your payroll appropriately. In some states and municipalities, you may already be in violation of the law. In others, changes will come this year and you need to be ready to institute them to avoid violating the law. The graphic below provides guidance on what states are making changes. Notice, that despite the rallies and protests, that not a single state is anywhere close to the $15 per hour mark.
I am predicting that we may see more activity toward a new minimum wage with the changes in Congress as a result of the midterm elections. It may also be a factor in the next set of Presidential elections. But, as with all prognostications, only time will provide the answer.
